Rahoni, Thassos and Skala (Port) of Rahoni: Two “twin” villages having much to offer to the visitor
Rahoni, Thassos is a pretty traditional village in the northwest of the island, 13 km away from the capital of Thassos, Limenas, and 5 km away from the port of Prinos. The village is located at the inland of the island, a few kilometres away from the central road.
Just as almost every village of the island, Rahoni, Thassos has its own access to the sea via Skala of Rahoni, or Port of Rahoni, with a long sandy beach and magnificent view to the Northern Aegean and Kavala.
Rahoni of Thassos - a special village with very interesting history
Rahoni comprises two settlements. On the right side is the most modern, homonym settlement of Rahoni, while on the left, on the slope, there is the older settlement of Saint George. Saint George in the past used to be even higher, almost on the top of the mountain in order to protect its residents from the rapacious attacks of the pirates – which were common then. At the old settlement of Saint George, according to historical resources, grew up Muhammad Ali, the famous founder of the Egyptian Dynasty.
Advancing through an inaccessible road, we shall find the homonym church of the old village, dedicated to the protector of the area, Saint George, as well as the remains of the dejected traditional houses. The habitants abandoned the settlement of Saint George and built a new one with a church in honour of Saint Dimitrios more to the south.
Continuing our road through a glen and from woody grounds with chestnuts and mulberry trees, we reach Rahoni, Thassos. It is the village with the so called “glebes”, belonging to the monasteries of Mount Athos.
Inside the village of Rahoni, Thassos, there dominate impressive mansions, traditionally built around the square with the age-long platan. At the edge of the village there is the beautiful stone church of the Dormition of the Virgin, which dates from the 19th century. The church is located at a breathtaking location next to a glen, surrounded by platans and very clear water running under its Chancel table.
On August 15th, the celebration of the homonym church of Rahoni is great in honour of the Virgin. Just after the Mass, a celebration is organized, with numerous local traditional dancing and music events, named “kourbani”, where all participants are offered traditionally cooked stew beef.
Rahoni, Thassos and Skala of Rahoni - a harmonious coexistence of centuries
Descending from Rahoni we find ourselves in a plain full of pines and huge endless olive groves, and then slowly we descend to the sea, where we meet Skala of Rahoni, the village’s port. From the central road axis of the island there descend vertical small roads leading to the beach, through a plain full of magnificent olive trees, shadowy pines, broad-leaved mulberry trees and very high poplars.
When reaching the beach of Skala of Rahoni, Thassos, we face the all-green pines and their branches lying on the crystal sea. The sea at the area is shallow and in most cases calm, ideal for swimming for youngsters and adults.
The habitants of the area of Skala of Rahoni work on fishing, agriculture, mainly the olive production, and during the last years on tourism, due to its great growth. Famous products of Skala of Rahoni are olives, oil and honey. A traditional local product which is also worthy tasting is the very famous sweet preserve walnut with flower honey.
Thanks to the growth of tourism in the area of Rahoni, THassos, on the beach you shall find, apart from organized tourist enterprises with deck chairs and sea umbrellas, many traditional taverns next to the sea, which offer fresh fish and fish appetizers for ouzo. At Skala of Rahoni also operates one of the most modern and big super markets of Thassos, with a wide variety of products, food and daily use items.
However, the biggest advantage of Skala of Rahoni, Thassos, is the crystal and all-blue sea of the sandy beach that impresses those who choose to spend a day here. Cafés and taverns next to the sea wait the visitors in order to offer them peaceful moments of relaxation. Skala of Rahoni is the place where, during the sunny days of summer, you may survey the sun mirroring on the houses of the city of Kavala, as well as the mainland along the shore.
Rahoni, Thassos and its port, Skala of Rahoni, constitute an excellent combination of mountain and sea, which excites the emotions. The visit at the beautiful Rahoni, Thassos and Skala of Rahoni, with its magnificent beach, will offer you moments of relaxation and euphoria.
