Prinos, Thassos and Skala of Prinos: A remarkable area of great interest

At the northwest part of the island we find one of the biggest villages in Thassos, Prinos. The village is built a few kilometres away from the beach and only 17 kilometres away from Limenas, in a forest full of olives.

Prinos, Thassos, along with Skala of Prinos constitute a significant area from a financial point of view, due to the recent discovery of oil deposits and the installation of a platform for its extraction from the wider sea area. The discovery of oil deposits in combination with the natural beauty of this place, the olive trees and the amazing beaches, as well as the passenger and commercial port of Skala, considerably assisted to the financial and touristic development of the place.

Prinos, Thassos - one of the most significant villages on the island

Prinos, Thassos, is built on the island’s central road. This village, due to its great development, is quite densely populated and constitutes a big commercial and cultural centre.

The area is not populated since the very distant past. Prinos, Thassos, comprises a complex of villages, older and more recent ones: the old village Kalyvia, the new one, Skala, the Small and Big Kazaviti, altogether constitute the village called Prinos.

At a short distance, you may find the premises of the olive oil press of Thassos, where the oil production is effectuated in a biological way. At the biological olive oil presses it is produced the famous olive oil named “Kardiofilo”, famous for its beneficial capacities. Furthermore, there is also the Agricultural Cooperative of Prinos in Thassos that effectuates the elaboration of the famous “alatoelia” (salty olive), as well as the Apicultural Cooperative of Prinos in Thassos that collects and packs the famous honey of Thassos.

Skala of Prinos - the seaport of Prinos, Thassos

A place in the area with continuous and rapid growth is Skala of Prinos. It is the second port of Thassos, where the ships and the flying dolphins coming from the port of Kavala dock. This area was developed on the basis of the needs of transport of the passengers and the service of ferry lines. The new settlement Dasyllio is united with Skala and has great tourist amenities and natural beauties.

Skala of Prinos is surrounded by numerous sand beaches, appropriate for swimming and sea sports, since the sea is quite shallow and the water calm and clean. The all-green pine forest along the beach of Skala of Prinos, Thassos, gives the impression that the pines come out from the water.

During the day, whenever the weather is good, the view to the mainland from Skala of Prinos, Thassos, is breathtaking, offering astonishing sunsets during summer. The visitor may enjoy the slow sunset behind the mountains in mainland Greece, while a few clouds create outstanding colour formations and compose scenery of incomparable beauty next to the sea and the rhythmical plash of the waves.

In the area of Skala of Prinos there are automatic cash machines (ATM), bus station and taxis, which may transfer you to any point in Thassos. During summer, the bus itineraries are frequent throughout the day and to all destinations.
