Astris, Thassos, or Astrida, Thassos: Endless beaches, nature and antiquities

Astris, Thassos, or Astrida, Thassos, is a small agricultural settlement near Potos, about 50 km away from Limenas, Thassos’ capital.

Astris, Thassos is at the southeast part of the island and took its name from its night sky that is always cloudless and offers great view to the stars (which are called “astra” in Greek). The area of Astrida is ideal for exploration by the visitor.

Astris, Thassos - the picturesque village and the beautiful beach

Astris, Thassos is a traditional agricultural Mediterranean village, full of olive trees. The first inhabitants of the village were seasonal workers who came to the neighboring village of Theologos in order to collect the fruits of olive trees.

The road to the village is full of oleasters mixed with pines, offering unique scenery to the visitor. The road after Astris reaches the small cove of Kalami with its distinctive sandy beach with glittering pebbles. Opposite to the cove you may clearly see the beautiful uninhabited island called Astriotiko.

The climate of Astris is very good, both during winter and summer – it is considered the healthiest climate on Thassos. Another feature of the area is its quite tasty, digestible and light water.

Astris, Thassos - a place of gorgeous beaches

At the homonym beach of Astris, apart from golden sand and blue water, you shall discover small picturesque taverns offering fresh fish and delicious local appetizers.

At the beginning of the settlement and on the central road you may find Psilli Ammos beach, which is sandy and organized, located at a small gulf and has all-blue water. There you will find a traditional tavern and a beach bar, famous for its summer parties. The magic of the place justifies the fame of Astris’ gulf as one of the most beautiful on the island.

Near the beach of Astris and through a wild road, it is located Giola. At this place, nature has created its own pool by the rocks of the coast. This natural swimming pool is an attraction for many visitors of Astris, Thassos, who do not lose the opportunity to enjoy a dive in its all-blue water.

Astris, Thassos and its surroundings, apart from the aforementioned beaches, have also more considerable beaches, organized or not, such as Barbouni, Ai Vassilis and Salonikios. Moreover, a few kilometres away from Astris to the direction of the Monastery of Michael Archangel, we shall meet the coves of Thymonia and Livadi, which may impress even the most demanding visitor with their exceptional beaches and their natural scenery created by the huge vertical rocks, descending from the mountain.

Historical and archaeological interest of Astris, Thassos

Astris, Thassos has great historical and archaeological interest. After perennial excavations at the area, there have been discovered many ancient remains, mostly remains of defensive towers.

Astriotiko island opposite to Kalami cove is considered by the ancient historian Herodotus the Island of the Sirens, where these mythical creatures of history that bewitched, according to Homer, with their song the travellers. From this point passed Odysseus during his return from Troy.

At the area of Astris, during the latest years submarine excavations discovered the existence of an ancient city that many assume is the lost city of Atlantis. Therefore, an effort has begun from foreign research programs in order to come to light parts from the ancient submarine city, in order to be studied.

Finally, at the area of Giola, there are ancient slabs with ancient Greek names and inscription written on them. You may yourself see some of them actually if you are patient and watchful!
